Behind the Design Recap: Episode 10
When you imagine living in the home of your dreams, do your daydreams begin in the living room? If so, we can’t say we’re surprised. It is called the living room for a reason—it’s where life happens! And when it comes to building a custom home, a thoughtfully-designed living room filled with personalized details is undoubtedly the piece de resistance.
Here in the Lowcountry, the coastal aesthetic is highly favored for residential interiors. After all, what would a coastal retreat be without an interior that reflects the natural beauty of its surroundings? Creating a beautiful coastal concept takes more than incorporating a wall of shiplap, though. The true beauty of a classic Lowcountry living room lies in the details. Let’s take a look at some of them now!
In Episode 10 of our Behind the Design series, Katie walks us through the subtle details our designers incorporated to elevate the living room of our Chesterfield plan. This home is packed with coastal charm and plenty of personality. Featuring a beautiful mudroom with exposed brick flooring, guest-rooms brimming with whimsical wallpapers, a butler’s pantry with contemporary cabinetry and colors, gorgeous outdoor entertaining areas, and glamorous bathrooms galore, this home showcases the differences a detail-oriented design team can make.
Like many of our favorite floor-plans, this home’s living room is open to the home’s dining area and kitchen.
From entertaining guests to cooking with kids, an open concept home is conducive to modern living. It is important, though, to avoid drowning out the purpose of each area by neglecting to include transitions from one space to the next.
In this home, our amazing design team used fixtures, furnishings, and their knack for creating cohesive color palettes to ensure that every corner of the open living space feels intentional.
The home’s luxuriously laidback white kitchen uses natural wood cabinets, gold hardware, eye-catching fixtures, and a painted metal range hood to create a warm and inviting ambiance. In the dining room, a delicate light fixture helps maintain the area’s definition while still retaining fluidity between other spaces.
The fireplace demonstrates a similar concept. By incorporating a custom concrete surround with the home’s traditional shiplap mantle, our design team created an edgy combination that subtly sets this living space apart from the rest of the open area—no walls required.
The built-in shelving units on either side of the mantle provide functionality while also adding to the charming coastal aesthetic. Bold black paint helped to unite the upper cabinetry of the living room built-ins and the metal range hood in the kitchen. The combination of natural-wash wood cabinets and darker doors enhances the mosaic of warm, organic tones featured throughout the rest of the space.
Of course, we’ve got to mention those gorgeous windows. In addition to flooding the home with natural light and lovely views of the Lowcountry landscape, the window frames are an integral aspect of the overall design. Making the choice to incorporate black interior window frames helped to emphasize the panes and draw attention to the gorgeous scenery that lies just on the other side. Last but not least, rustic hand-hewn beams were used to complement the oak floors while also setting the living room apart from other components of Chesterfield’s open design.
