5 Ways to Upgrade Your Master Bath

Most of us may believe the kitchen or living room is one of the most important rooms of a home, but we can’t forget that the master bathroom is another essential area–after all, we spend time in our bathrooms daily!

Because it’s such a private space, it’s easy to forget your bathroom is a key room in your home–a place where you can relax, rewind, and recharge. If it feels a little bland compared to the rest of your Lowcountry home, here are five ways you can upgrade your master bath to create the ultimate sanctuary!

Add Bold Statement Colors or Patterns

Many bathrooms will have white or pastel walls or cabinetry by default, so a splash of color in the right places is a great way to give the space more personality.

  • Painted Cabinetry - Bold blues, rustic oranges, or natural greens are a great way to liven up your bathroom vanity and cabinetry.

  • Refreshed Walls - Patterned wallpaper or a colorful accent wall can give your bathroom just the thing it needs to feel unique to you.

  • Unique Shower Wall or Floor Tiles - You have a bit more flexibility when replacing your shower wall or floor tiles. Switch up the pattern, tile style, or color for a new look.

  • Retouched Clawfoot Tub - If your master bathroom is home to a traditional clawfoot tub, you can spruce it up with a fresh coat of paint on the exterior to complement the rest of the space. Satin or semi-gloss paint is ideal for this type of upgrade.

Swap Out the Metal Finishes

If your bathroom has polished nickel finishes, try out bronze, chrome, brass, or matte black instead. Whatever you choose to go with, make sure to update all hardware in your bathroom so that they match.

Here’s a list so you don’t forget a single detail:

  • Cabinet and drawer knobs and handles

  • Shower and tub hardware

  • Sink hardware

  • Mirror frames

  • Light fixtures

Upgrade the Lighting

Updated or additional lighting may be just the upgrade you need to give your bathroom a refreshed look!

Add a Dimmer - Enjoy a nice, soothing bath with the lights turned down low!

Swap Out Yellow Bulbs for LED Bulbs - Daylights mimic natural sunlight very well and provide more brightness to a room.

Increase Vanity Lighting - A series of vanity lights or sconces between your mirrors can provide the right amount of light to this area.

Add a Small Chandelier - A nice fixture hanging over the bathtub or near the window can add an elegant touch to your bathroom.

Another lighting option–though technically not a fixture–is installing a window or skylight in the bathroom to bring in more natural light.

Add Storage Solutions

There are several storage upgrades you can make in your bathroom to really maximize your space:

Add Recessed Shelving or Cabinetry - Whether you use this space as a medicine cabinet, a place for Bluetooth speakers, or additional towels is up to you!

Custom Drawers with Outlets - A unique addition to bathrooms, drawers with outlets allow you the space to store items such as curling irons and blow dryers, as well as a place to plug them in while they’re in use.

Increase Counter Space - Extend the vanity area to include more counter space for a double sink installation or a small seating area for applying makeup.

Floating Vanities - This upgrade can add more space between your bathroom’s floor and the vanity, leaving room for storage options like wicker baskets underneath.

Update the Little Things

Replace the Grout - The grout used in bathrooms is often white and requires routine cleaning and scrubbing to remove mildew and other stains from view. If you have light-colored tile, consider replacing the grout with a dark-colored option like gray to give your bathroom a more modern appearance!

Create a Spa-Like Experience - Upgrade to a luxury or rainfall showerhead, add a shower bench, built-in speakers, or a small entertainment center for soft, soothing music, and complete the space with rugs to emulate a full spa experience! If you really want to get fancy, you can also install radiant-heat flooring and heated towel bars to avoid the feel of cold tile or textiles.

Give a Medicine Cabinet a Refresh - Line the inside of your medicine cabinet–and other cabinetry–with an adhesive wallpaper you love. For a more modern update, you can make the cabinet multi-functional by adding a magnifying mirror inside the door, or a small light to make finding what you need easy.

Go Green - The bathroom is the last place you’d think to add a houseplant or two, but you’d be surprised by the effect it can have on the space! Consider adding a few plants that do not require a lot of direct sunlight and thrive in humidity, such as bamboo, pothos plants, or ferns.
