19 Tips to Create a Spa-Like Master Bath

There’s nothing like coming home after a long day at work and drawing up a nice, warm bath to unwind and relax. Sounds like a pretty dreamy scenario, we know. But you know what would make it even better? Doing so in a master bath that feels more like a five-star spa.

Here are a few simple upgrades you can make to create a spa-like master bath of your own you’ll never want to leave.

Use Storage to Organize Bath Essentials

Start the process of creating your personal spa by getting rid of clutter and organizing your bath essentials. Let’s face it: you can’t achieve relaxation if all you see is a messy countertop every time you walk into the bathroom!

First, take a look at products currently stored on the countertop or in shelves, drawers or cabinets, and throw out anything you haven’t used within the past year. Chances are, you may come across a few items that have expired and aren’t worth holding onto anyway.

From there, consider your storage options:

  • Under-sink storage - Add small bins under the sink to keep items organized. If you have a more modern master bath and opted for a floating sink, consider adding a floating shelf above or decorative baskets below to take advantage of that extra space.

  • Open storage and shelves - If you have any wall space that isn’t being used in the bathroom, consider creating a niche for floating shelves or built-in cubbies. If there’s a bit of wall available above your bathtub, you could also add a small built-in shelf to store products such as bath bombs, essential oils, and more.

  • Closed storage - Add a sliding or hinged door to cover previously open cubbies that hold cleaning products, or install storage towers at the ends of your countertops. Pull-out storage or hidden hampers are other excellent options for smaller bathrooms.

  • Over-the-door storage - Simple hooks or pocket organizers along a vacant wall or on doors can help free up space in other areas of the bathroom.

  • Tray - Avoid having small toiletry items, watches, and jewelry spread out across your countertop by keeping them contained on a tray within individual containers.

  • Bar cart - Use a bar cart to store toilet paper rolls, towels, or any other bath essentials. The best part about this option is that it’s mobile, so you can store it almost anywhere when it’s not in use.

  • Towel racks - Ladder towel racks make great storage options for plush textiles, especially in smaller bathrooms. They can be placed flat against the wall or fitted over the toilet.

Upgrade Bathroom Fixtures and Appliances

Try any of these upgrades or additions to uplevel your master bath:

  • Showerhead - Depending on your preferences, you can upgrade from a traditional showerhead to something more luxurious, like a rainfall showerhead or one that offers a massaging spray.

  • Bathtub - A freestanding bathtub makes an excellent statement piece in a relaxing retreat.

  • Toilet - Some upgraded toilet models come with heated seats and/or bidets.

  • Sink - Make your new spa hands-free by upgrading to a touchless, automated faucet.

  • Towel warmer - There’s nothing like wrapping yourself in a warm, clean towel after stepping out of the shower or a relaxing bath, especially during the colder months!

  • Mirrors - Mirrors and other reflective surfaces can quickly make a space appear much larger and brighter.

  • Lighting - Opt for bulbs that emit white light to create a bright vanity. Dimmer switches also make a great upgrade, and don’t forget to stock up on scented candles for your next at-home spa day.

Add Decor and Amenities That Promote Relaxation

Recreate a spa-like atmosphere with these additions:

  • Neutral, natural colors and textures - If you really want to recreate the spa experience, you’ll want to choose tranquil colors for your walls and floors. Stick with muted earth tones such as grays, blues, greens, and whites, and select natural materials when possible - think pebble tiles for the shower floor accented by a teak or bamboo non-slip bath mat.

  • Houseplants - Keep a couple of potted plants on the floor, or utilize a hanging planter to allow trailing greenery to cascade from the ceiling. If you’re not confident you have a green thumb, don’t worry; faux plants will give you a similar look without the upkeep.

  • Shower chair or bench - This makes a great addition to a large walk-in shower; take the pressure off your feet while you wash up or use it as a storage area for soaps and shampoos. Wooden shower chairs or benches will have the most spa-like aesthetic.

  • Side chairs - If your master bath is big enough, you can also add a cushioned side chair or settee; just make sure it can withstand heat and moisture.

  • Oil diffusers - Complete your spa day with some aromatherapy.
